Clean Up Australia with a 10c refund system
“The volunteers for Clean Up Australia day yesterday deserve a medal. They’ve spent the day hauling rubbish out of our creeks, our parks and our roadsides, which is a great contribution to their communities”, said Greens MLC Colleen Hartland.
“But a lot of that rubbish wouldn’t be there if we could return our drink bottles, cans and cartons for a 10c refund, like they have in South Australia.”
“I’m planning to introduce legislation for a 10c deposit system in Victoria.”
“I talked about it with the other volunteers on Clean Up Australia Day, at Cross Street and Clarke Street in West Footscray. It’s an incredibly popular concept, it reduces litter in South Australia, and I can’t understand why the Brumby government is reluctant here in Victoria. I’d like the community to join with me to try to change the Brumby government’s mind on this issue.”
“The figures from yesterday’s Clean Up Australia Day haven’t come in yet, but last year, the top ten litter items included aluminium soft drink and alcoholic drink cans, plastic drink bottles, glass bottles (including dangerous broken glass bottles) and plastic and metal caps from drink bottles.”
“Imagine a world where bottles, cans and cartons are worth a 10c refund! They won’t be left lying around. They’d be community money instead of litter,” said Colleen Hartland
