Another 2,741 reasons to oppose Eddington's new roads
Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has presented a petition to parliament organised by West Sunshine community campaigners, with 2,741 signatures of people opposing the new roads and tunnels proposed in the “Eddington Report”.
“I was absolutely honoured to table the petition. Just holding it in my hands, feeling the weight of the number of pages, was a very moving experience.”
“The petition asks the government to reject the road tunnel and linked tollways, because they will cause more congestion and pollution. It says that roadways are not the solution, especially with peak oil and climate change. Every one of the 2,741 people opposes the compulsory acquisition of homes, schools, public parks and facilities. They want the money spent on public transport instead.”
“I support them completely.”
“Last week, the West Footscray group’s version of the exact same petition was tabled, with 844 signatures. Today, my colleague Greg Barber presented a petition of about 2,995 people opposing a new tollway which would carve up Melbourne’s environmentally sensitive green wedges to connect Greensborough to EastLink.”
“Next week I will release an independent report on the public submissions to the Eddington process.”
“It’s just so exciting to see people from suburbs all over Melbourne, especially my own western suburbs, forming community campaigns. It’s such an honour to campaign with them, and represent them,” said Ms Hartland
