Take action: 10c Deposit on drink bottles, cans and cartons

The Victorian Environment Minister Gavin Jennings and Premier John Brumby are  the biggest roadblock to achieving a deposit scheme for drink containers in Victoria.  We think it's time for them to change their minds.

A 10 cent levy on all recyclable containers will be good for the environment and the economy, with research showing that a national container deposit scheme will:

• Cut greenhouse gas emissions by nearly a million tonnes a year, like switching 135,000 homes to 100% renewable energy
• Save enough water to supply more than 30,000 Australian homes
• Improve air quality equivalent to taking 56,000 cars off the road
• Significantly reduce litter
• Create 1000 direct jobs in a sustainable industry

A Newspoll found that 90% of people want this scheme and some of the major industry players have also backed it including Alcoa, Sita Environmental Solutions, Revive Recycling and Eco-Waste.

Send Mr Jennings and Mr Brumby a ‘message in a bottle' to help give them the courage they need to stand up to the beverage industry lobyists.

Report after report shows that a 10c deposit will save money, clean up our streets and parks, and create new green jobs. I think it's time for you to change your mind and join the public support of a 10c deposit scheme. With the new technology available, and the broad support of the recycling industry and environment groups, the time has come for a 10c deposit in Victoria - or even better, a national scheme. The public overwhelmingly supports drink container deposits. It's popular and successful in South Australia. The Northern Territory government were applauded when they announced they will introduce a scheme. Every year, Australians use and throw about 11 billion drink containers. A 10 cent levy on all recyclable containers will be good for the environment and the economy, with research showing that a national container deposit scheme will:   - Cut greenhouse gas emissions by nearly a million tonnes a year, the equivalent to switching 135,000 homes to 100% renewable energy   - Save enough water to supply more than 30,000 Australian homes   - Improve air quality equivalent to taking 56,000 cars off the road   - Significantly reduce litter   - Create 1000 direct jobs in a sustainable industry   I am among the 90% of Australian's who support this scheme and are willing to pay for it.   I urge you to have the courage to change your mind on this issue, and finally take the steps necessary to support the establishment of a countainer deposit system either in Victoria or, better still, nationally.   Yours Sincerely,
